Is That Soap Really Responsibly Made? Find Out

If you’ve ever tried to shop for eco-friendly products you’ve probably found that’s it’s not as easy as it seems. How do you know if a product is made by a company that follows socially responsible practices, or makes use of renewable energy? Now there is a source that can help. Cradle to Cradle Certified is a third-party certification program that assesses products for safety and environmental health.

Cradle to Cradle Certified evaluates products on five different categories: material health, material reutilization, renewable energy use, water stewardship and social responsibility. Products are Cradle to Cradle Certified at one of four levels (Basic, Silver, Gold, or Platinum) based on achievement against criteria in all five categories. The Cradle to Cradle website makes it easy to search from products that cut the mustard, from shampoo to ironing boards.

The program also provides guidelines to help businesses implement the programs standards,  which focuses on using  materials that can be recovered and reused, or composted as biological nutrients. The program was founded in 2005 and today, more than 425 different products have taken part in the certification program. You can search the full list of products on the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation website.

The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, a nonprofit that was formed in 2010,  is now the certifying body for the third-party eco-label. Companies who wish to have a product certified will partner with an official service provider to collect and evaluate data about the product design and manufacturing impacts and then submit a completed application to the Institute.
