The two-story, 3660 square-foot vacation house, which will be built on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia from a shipping container has been awarded first prize in the [AC-CA] Architectural Competition. The home was designed by Czech architect Ales Javurek, while the house he designed will stand on a hillside overlooking the ocean and will take full advantage of the gorgeous, panoramic views of Bondi Beach. The planned project is sustainable not only because it is made from a decommissioned shipping container, but also because it will preserve the surrounding area’s landscape, while it is also designed to take into account the area’s climate conditions.
The trees already growing on the building site will be worked into the design so that they will separate the parking spaces, located on the highest slope, from the house. The house and swimming pool are located on lower slopes as this home will be built on three platforms. Also, the green area that would be lost to the footprint of the home will instead be replanted to the roof of the house to act as a green roof and a private garden for the residents.
Apart from the shipping containers, the house is built primarily from features horizontal wooden slabs which are supported by slight columns. These wooden details form a nice juxtaposition with the steel containers, blending together the natural with the industrial.
To take full advantage of natural light, the entire ground floor is enclosed in glass, which opens up the living spaces, making the kitchen, living room and dining room appear larger. All the bedrooms are located on the second level of the home and offer the inhabitants more privacy.
The house was designed using the shipping containers as supporting walls, while the roof will be made using horizontally placed wooden planks. The walls and floors of the home are also lined by wooden planks, to resemble the hulk of a ship.
In the summer, the home will use several different mechanisms to protect the interiors. For example, the wooden pergolas will protect from solar exposure and heat, the green roof will keep the interior from overheating, and the fully operable glass doors will enable cross drafts and let in all the needed fresh air for ventilation. On the other hand, in the winter, the large glass windows will let in enough sunlight to warm the interior, while the green roof will help retain the heat.
