Located in the wooded hills of Vicenza, Italy, this zero-energy studio uses all sorts of creative design strategies to produce its own energy and insulation. Geothermal power, solar power, and a Corten steel shell are some of most prominent factors in energy generation, but it’s the 40,000 recycled plastic bottles making up the wall and roof insulation that really make this Tvzeb studio stand out.

The unique space is a collaboration between Traverso-Vighy Architecture and the University of Padua’s Department of Technical Physics. Environmental sensitivity was of the utmost importance when developing the design, which features a larch frame made of natural materials, a steel roof, and structure that can be completely disassembled and recycled if needed.

Energy is provided through 16 rooftop solar panels, a geothermal pump, and wood-fired stove that keeps the interior nice and warm during the winter. In the summer, a custom LED lighting system maximizes the use of natural light and keeps the interior at a comfortable temperature.

The best part is that not only is the home 100% self-sufficient with its energy supply, but the 40,000 plastic bottles make sure none of it goes to waste.
