10 Ways to Use Shipping Containers as Homes

In the last few years, it’s been well-established that shipping containers make awesome, trendy and eco-friendly homes. But for those who still doubt it (or anyone looking for inspiration) here is a list of ten ways in which a shipping container can become a home, ranging from the simplest to the most extravagant.

If you thought a single shipping container is too small to become a comfy home, think again. The SurfShack, designed and built by WA based designer/contractor Hartman Kable is a cozy beach retreat built from an 8×20 foot double ended shipping container. The interior measures 160 square feet, and all the furniture is custom built and foldable to save space.

2. Artist’s Retreat in Savannah, Georgia

A shipping container home that’s a little more sophisticated is Julio Garcia’s retreat in the woods near Savannah, Georgia. He repurposed two 40-foot shipping containers to build this modern home and kept their exteriors in the original state, forming a nice contrast between the industrial and nature.

3. Shipping Container Cottage Extension

Shipping containers can also easily be used to expand existing homes, as is the case with this cottage expansion done by architect Christof Jantzen of California. He used five recycled shipping containers to expand the small cottage into a 1550-square-foot family home. In the process he also succeeded to create a wonderful blend of the old and the new.

4. Green Shipping Container Home

This Flagstaff, Arizona family residence is green in more than just exterior color. It was built out of six recycled shipping containers and measures 2,000-square-feet. It features 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 offices, and a storage room, as well as a green house/solarium. In addition to that, it is also equipped with a number of sustainable technologies, such as a 3.6 kW AEA Inc. on-grid solar system, and a water management and harvesting system created by TBKA Landscape Architects and installed by Northern Arizona Pump.

This home showcases a very creative solution to building a home out of recycled shipping containers. The home was designed by Georgia-based architect Dachi Papuashvili and consists of 2 containers, one of which is placed vertically, and the other horizontally, resulting in the cross shape of the home. Once built the home will also feature a roof top mounted solar power array and a rain water harvesting system, which will enable it to function completely off-the-grid.

6. The Beach Box

This is thought to be the first shipping container home in the Hamptons, NY. The luxury beach house is built out of six shipping containers, with four comprising the ground level and two the top level, which houses an open kitchen, living room, and dining room. The Beach Box measures 2,000 square feet and has four bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, and a large exterior deck. Just looking at it, it is hard to tell that it was constructed using shipping containers.

7. Upcycle House

This home was built by the Danish architecture firm Lendager Arkitekter using only recycled and upcycled building materials. To construct the home they used two repurposed shipping containers, while they also used aluminum cans, recycled paper and discarded wood chips, among other things. . The carbon emissions resulting from building this home were 86% lower than those that would result from building a traditional house.

8. Colorado Solar Shipping Container House

This modern home is located in Nederland, Colorado and is built out of two shipping containers. It was designed by the firm Studio H:T and is equipped with a number of sustainable features, including a solar PV array, passive cooling, a green roof, and pellet-stove heating.

9. Maison IDEKIT Container Home

This is another beautiful and unique shipping container home. It is located in Quebec and was built out of seven repurposed shipping containers. This four bedroom home measures 3,000 square feet. Its most unique feature is that the interior walls were left in their original state, including all the dents and scratches, while the exterior ones were fitted with five inches of insulation and clad by brown wood siding.

10. Carroll House

This home is an excellent example of how shipping containers can be used to build a spacious home even in densely populated urban areas. This home is being built out of 21 stacked containers on a corner lot in Brooklyn, NY, which measures only 25 by 100 feet. The shipping containers were cut diagonally to form this three-story home, which will measure 5,000 square feet once completed.
