In the market for a new wallet, and looking for something both eco-friendly and funky? Consider the Paperwallet: constructed of Tyvek—more about that in a moment—it’s paper thin, but tough, durable, water resistant, 100 percent recyclable and comes in a wide range of artistic designs.
Started in 2007 by a group of young artists and creative entrepreneurs in New York, Paperwallet is all about creating a statement when you pull out your cards or cash. The Paperwallet website features designs from André Saraiva, (aka Monsieur André aka Monsieur A) a French graffiti artist; Chato, a “monster translator”/designer/street artist/illustrator from Colombia; and Alexander Tyapochkin of Yeah Yeah Studio in Moscow, among others from 15 countries around the world.
Paperwallet is billed as being both thin and comfortable, expanding easily to accommodate your essentials, but able to fit easily in the pocket of your choice. As mentioned, the wallet is made out of Tyvek, a synthetic material from DuPont made from flash-spun high-density polyethylene fibers, sheets of which can engineered to make a huge range of products, from envelopes to packaging materials to high-performance protective membranes used in buildings.
The company says each wallet is composed, in part, of recycled materials (although it doesn’t detail exactly what parts) and is fully recyclable at the end of its natural life. In fact, the company rewards those who recycle their Paperwallet with a discount on a subsequent purchase. (Just don’t forget to include your email address in the envelope, so they know who to send the discount to.)
Profits on each Paperwallet are shared with the artist who created the design featured on it, so you’ll have the added satisfaction of knowing that the cash in your wallet helped to support the person who designed the art featured on it.
If you’re an artist yourself, consider submitting your work for consideration, as the company is dedicated to showcasing the work of emerging artist from around the world, and is always looking for designs. If chosen, your work could wind up in the next limited edition art series of Paperwallets, and make its way into the pockets of green-minded hipsters the world over.
