Clever Transformation of a Small Apartment

It’s always nice to see clever ways of turning tiny interiors into functional living spaces that feel much larger than they actually are. The French architect Richard Guilbault recently achieved just that with a renovation of a tiny Paris apartment into a home that looks and feels much larger than its 322 square foot (30 sq m) area would suggest.

The creation is called simply Flat and was fitted with moveable furniture, a folding bed, and a tiny bathroom to make the most of the available space. It is located in the 18th arrondissement area of the city, and was renovated in early 2015. The original apartment contained four small and dark rooms, which have now become a mostly open-plan apartment for two.

The living area takes up most of the interior space in the apartment, and is comprised of a kitchen, lounging area, and a dining table fitted with wheels so it can be moved around easily in case more space is needed for other activities. A large cabinet is set against one of the walls and contains the TV, clothing rails, a wine rack, and a refrigerator, which can all be hidden out of sight.

The apartment also has a tiny bathroom, which measures just 24 square feet (2.3 sq m) yet still has enough room for a toilet, sink, and shower. The bedroom area is perhaps the most innovative of all the renovations, since the double Murphy style bed in it can be raised and reveal a large storage space underneath. A sliding door separates the bedroom from the rest of the apartment, but, since the apartment owners have a cat, the designers included an entrance to a crawlspace located beneath the bedroom for its use.

All in all, this is a great example of just how much can be done with a limited amount of space and proves that even tiny, cramped apartments can be transformed into cozy homes.
