Winning the 2013 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Housing Award in the One and Two Family Custom Housing category, Eagle Ridge is located on Orcas Island off the coast of Washington state. It was designed by Gary Gladwish Architecture to satisfy the client’s desire for high levels of energy efficiencies while accommodating accessibility concerns.
Sustainable features include the use of structural insulated panels (SIPS) in construction, windows and doors that surpass energy code requirements, maximization of passive solar, the use of LED and CFL lighting, and incorporation of re/use/upcycle materials such as wood from a demolished barn and siding made of rusty steel. The landscaping incorporates rocks and moss that were moved from other areas of the building site.
Built on a hillside that is covered with thistle, moss, fir trees, madrone trees, beech trees, and rocks, the home emphasizes and complements nature with its large doors that open up to breathtaking views.
