Tiny houses have found homes as hotel rooms at Caravan Tiny House Hotel, which celebrated its grand opening in the Alberta Arts District, a neighborhood in northeast Portland, Oregon, on July 27, 2013.
Owners Deb Delman and Kol Peterson say that one of the goals of Caravan is to showcase the tiny home lifestyle. Three unique units (Rosebud, Pearl, and Tandem) share the common area outdoors that includes covered seating, a hammock, a barbecue, and a fire pit. In a hostel-like environment, visitors are encouraged to socialize.
Tandem – 160 square feet, features two queen-size mattresses, pine panelling, cork floors, and sleeps up to four people
Pearl – 90 square feet, features a wet bathroom (combined toilet and shower), stainless countertops, dinette that converts to a double bed, sleeping loft, and sleeps up to three people
Rosebud – 120 square feet, features natural wood interior and exterior, river rock countertop, window seat with built-in storage, mason jar lighting, and sleeps up to two people
Interior and exterior decor is themed with Portland memorabilia and local art. Room service is provided by Radio Room, a restaurant and bar that is located nearby. The Alberta Arts District is within walking distance, where visitors can find many other businesses including bicycle rentals, galleries, pubs, cafes, shops, and a food co-op.
All units have closets, kitchenettes, dining tables, flush toilets, and showers. They are connected to Portland’s water, electric, and sewer lines. The price to stay at Caravan is $125 per night. The Caravan Tiny House Hotel website lists all of the amenities that are included in each unit, with many more available up request. Information about sustainability measures that were taken during the design and build process can be found on the individual web page for each unit.
Over a year, permits were obtained that classify Caravan “somewhere between a hotel, a vacation rental, and a campground.” The lot is zoned as a recreation park and the units are zoned as travelers’ accommodations. Capacity for six units allow for the planned addition of two more tiny homes in the future.
