This Nederland, Colorado container home, designed by Studio H:T, performs at net-zero energy consumption by utilizing passive strategies of insulation and orientation, active solar photovoltaic and thermal systems, and the harvesting of on-site renewable fuel (timber is selectively and sustainably cleared to burn in the high-efficiency wood stove).
A center space between two shipping containers, creates areas for entry, living, and dining, with a loft deck that facilitates outdoor sleeping on a rolling platform bed and a green roof provides for insulation and water efficiency measures.
Studio H:T foresees “a future when all construction and operation of the built environment supports the long-term well-being of individuals, societies, and the earth.” Understanding that buildings consume more energy than any other sector in the world, they believe that architects and design professionals should take very seriously their responsibility to the planet and future inhabitants by designing and rehabilitating structures with sustainability at the forefront.
All principles at Studio H:T are LEED accredited and they have adopted the 2030 Challenge, which embraces the following targets:
New buildings, developments and major renovations designed to meet fossil fuel, GHG-emitting, energy consumption performance standards of 60% below regional (or country) averages and medians for the building type.
An equal amount of existing building area renovated annually to meet fossil fuel, GHG-emitting, energy consumption performance standards of 60% of the regional (or country) averages and medians for the building type.
Fossil fuel reduction standards for new buildings and major renovations increased to: 70% in 2015, 80% in 2020, 90% in 2025, and then arbon-neutral in 2030 (operating with no fossil fuel GHG emitting energy).
Targets can be achieved through implementation of innovative sustainable design strategies, generation of on-site renewable power, and/or through the purchase of (20% maximum) renewable energy.
