Easy to Build DIY Tiny Home

Those wishing to downsize to a tiny home can either purchase such a home from a firm specializing in building them, or build one themselves. And the latter just got easier thanks to plans provided by the firm Portland Alternative Dwellings (PAD). The plans are for building a so-called Bunk Box, and they created them in collaboration with Shelter Wise.

The Bunk Box is to be built atop a 16 ft (4.8 m)-long double-axle trailer, and yields a floor space of 125 sq ft (11.61 sq m), with a 72 sq ft (6.6. sq m) loft. This is quite small, so the Bunk Box is perhaps best suited for use as a cabin, guesthouse, or a camping alternative.

The framing on the interior is to be left exposed, and according to PAD this is so that the width of the interior space is extended by 7 inches (17.78 cm). Having no walls limits the type of insulation that can be used. To remedy this, the entire home is wrapped in 2 inches (5.08 cm) of closed-cell foam insulation.

The living area covers almost the entire ground level of the home, though there is also a kitchenette and a bathroom in this space. The latter features a shower and a toilet. There is also a sitting area, which can be used as a workspace or a dining table. The bedroom is located in the loft, which is accessible via a ladder, and it is big enough to fit a double bed and not much else.

The plans call for installing two skylights into the roof, which allows light to flood the interior and make it appear more spacious and inviting. The home pictured here was clad in wood, which was treated with the Shou Sugi Ban method, which makes it durable and resistant to fire, termites and other pests. The builder can of course decide on their own preferred cladding material.

They are selling the plans for Bunk Box for $99. The plans include detailed construction drawings and basic electrical plans. They also outline which materials are best and offer some other pertinent suggestions, such as how to make the home run off-the-grid by installing a composting toilet, a solar power array, and such.
