Early in June, the Pacific Coast Building Conference presented its 50th Annual Golden Nugget Awards to architects and developers at its annual convention dubbed The Art, Science + Business of Housing. The awards are given to firms that show “excellence and innovation in addressing complex design/build issues.”
KTGY Group, Inc., Architecture + Planning was named the winner of the 2013 PCBC Gold Nugget Grand Award for the “Best Zero Net Energy Home Design” with its ABC (Affordable, Buildable and Certifiable) Green Home, a 1,695 square foot single-family residence that provides builders with a blueprint for mass production of houses that can generate energy in amounts that are equal or greater to consumption.
Representing a collaboration of nearly seventy companies that contributed in labor, materials, and products, the ABC Green Home is part of an educational effort that is geared toward students who have an interest in construction trades. Students from seven high schools in Orange County were invited to assist with the building of the ABC Green Home.
To provide an opportunity to educate and train people about sustainable living, the home will be on display at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine for the rest of 2013, including the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013 that will be held on October 3-13, 2013 at the same location. Plans are in the works for the ABC Green Home to be donated to a combat-wounded service person in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity.
Sustainable features of this three bedroom, three bathroom home include solar panels, a cool roof, grey-water recycling system, and the latest in energy and water efficiencies. It was built with less wood and more insulation to permit temperature regulation.
