LivingHomes is looking to debunk the popular myth that buying a LEED-certified, sustainable home is only for those with money. The home developer recently debuted its C6 home design, a prefabricated, zero-energy, zero-carbon, green-certified home. And, it’s available in most states for around just $179,000, or about $145 a square-foot.
LivingHomes, which started in 2006, offers nine different LEED-certified, pre-fabricated designs to home builders and individuals across the nation. It came up with the C6 design as part of a partnership with Make it Right, a nonprofit founded by Brad Pitt and architect William McDonough. Part of the nonprofit’s goal was to build 150 LEED Platinum-certified homes in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward, where Hurricane Katrina left the most damage. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each C6 will help support the efforts of Make It Right.

The C6 home floor plan includes three bedrooms and two bathrooms, cork floors, wood ceilings and floor-to ceiling glass windows. High-tech features include a lighting system that can be controlled from an iPhone. But it’s the home’s green features that really make it stand out. The design is the first of LivingHome’s designs to boast that it is zero energy, zero water, zero emissions, zero carbon and zero waste.
The home’s energy efficient features include lighting, appliances, smart heating/AC control system. Photovoltaics help create 100 percent of the home’s power. Low-flow water features and a grey water ready system make it zero water and no VOC paint and formaldehyde-free millwork make the home zero emissions.
The home is made from recycled materials and a carbon offset is included in the purchase price. The home also has the distinction of being “zero ignorance,” meaning there are systems in place to provide real time energy information to residents.

The home’s architecture was designed with modern in mind and is reminiscent of a Californian home from the 50s and 60s. The design is organized around a courtyard that is accessible through a variety of openings and features an open floor plan that is ideal for outdoor/indoor lifestyles. And its 1,232 square feet, is well below the national average of 2,380 square-foot size of most new homes.
“It has always been our most important goal to develop an affordable LivingHome,” Steve Glenn, CEO of LivingHomes said in a statement. “The C6 is not only our lowest cost LivingHome – it’s half the cost of current models – it’s also the easiest and fastest LivingHome to build.”
