Designers Maria Roca and Erika Biarnes of the firm Be-elasticto from Barcelona, Spain, created an innovative set of metal clips, which can be clipped on to any type of flat material to create a table, or another type of flat piece of furniture. The creation is called Snap and at first glance resembles oversized paper clips. It’s a simple DIY hack and a great way to repurpose wood and other materials to create your own furniture.
The designers were inspired to create Snap after a while spent travelling and living abroad, which came with a lot of frustration over the impracticality of the furniture available. To solve this problem they came up with Snap, which is small and light enough to carry around on your travels. Snap is basically a flexible clamp which can be adjusted to a range of 0.3 to 1.5 inches (1-4 cm). It is made up of a flat material, which is inserted between the epoxy-coated clamp and then secured with a PVC-coated cable. The latter runs from the clamp part to the leg part of the clamp.
The cable is essential to the design, and a sort of secret ingredient that allows Snap to function as intended. A tightened cable is what lends the legs and furniture created using them the needed stability (together with the rigidity of the metal part, of course).
Snap can transform basically any type of flat material into a table, shelving, or even a chair, provided the occupant does not weigh more than 216 pounds (98 kg), which is the maximum weight the four legs together can hold. This means that it is now that much easier to upcycle found boards, metal sheets, or other types of recycled materials into functional and stylish furniture.
The legs also come in a great set of colors that are perfect for any design project. The creators of Snap are currently raising funds on Kickstarter to begin production on these innovative furniture legs.
