{"id":17686,"date":"2013-10-21T21:00:11","date_gmt":"2013-10-21T21:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/?p=308703"},"modified":"2013-10-21T21:00:11","modified_gmt":"2013-10-21T21:00:11","slug":"scientists-say-no-consensus-on-gmo-food-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/scientists-say-no-consensus-on-gmo-food-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists Say \u2018No Consensus on GMO Food Safety\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":null,"protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tomatoes-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Photo credit: popularresistance.org\"><\/p>\n<p>An international group of more than <a href=\"http:\/\/sustainablepulse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/First_signatories_to_the_statement_no_scientific_consensus_on_GMO_safety_lv.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">90 scientists, academics&nbsp;and physicians <\/a>released a <a href=\"http:\/\/sustainablepulse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ENSSER_Statement_no_scientific_consensus_on_GMO_safety_ENG_LV.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> today saying there is no scientific consensus on the safety of genetically modified (GM) foods and crops.<\/p>\n<p>The statement was issued in response to recent claims from the GM industry and some scientists,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.psmag.com\/health\/scientific-debate-gm-foods-theyre-safe-66711\/\" target=\"_blank\">journalists<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jonentine\/2013\/10\/14\/2000-reasons-why-gmos-are-safe-to-eat-and-environmentally-sustainable\/\" target=\"_blank\">commentators<\/a> that there is a &ldquo;scientific consensus&rdquo; that genetically modified organisms (GMO) were generally found safe for human and animal consumption. The statement&nbsp;calls these claims misleading&nbsp;and says, &ldquo;This claimed consensus on GMO safety does not exist.&rdquo;<\/p>\n[caption id=\"attachment_308712\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"500\"]<a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tomatofi2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Photo credit: popularresistance.org\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tomatofi2.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\"><\/a> Photo credit: popularresistance.org[\/caption]\n<p>Moreover, the claim encourages a climate of complacency that could lead to a lack of regulatory and scientific rigor and appropriate caution, the group said, potentially endangering the health of humans, animals and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The statement draws attention to the diversity of opinion over GMOs in the scientific community&nbsp;and the often contradictory or inconclusive findings of studies on GMO safety,&rdquo; <a href=\"http:\/\/sustainablepulse.com\/2013\/10\/21\/global-scientists-issue-gmo-safety-warning-breaking-news\/#.UmWEDZSDRFQ\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Dr. Angelika Hilbeck, chairwoman of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ensser.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">European Network&nbsp;of Scientists for Social and Environmental Responsibility<\/a> (ENSSER) and one of the signers. &ldquo;These include&nbsp;toxic effects on laboratory animals fed GM foods, increased pesticide use from GM crop&nbsp;cultivation and the unexpected impacts of Bt insecticidal crops on beneficial and non-target&nbsp;organisms.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Sigers of the statement include prominent and respected scientists, including Dr. Hans&nbsp;Herren, a former winner of the World Food Prize and this year&rsquo;s Alternative Nobel Prize laureate,&nbsp;and Dr. Pushpa Bhargava, known as the father of modern biotechnology in India.<\/p>\n<p>Signers of the statement are calling for the compliance to the precautionary approach to GM&nbsp;crops and foods internationally agreed upon in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.councilforresponsiblegenetics.org\/genewatch\/GeneWatchPage.aspx?pageId=422\" target=\"_blank\">Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and UN&rsquo;s&nbsp;Codex Alimentarius<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>ENSSER released the statement the week after the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldfoodprize.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Food Prize<\/a> was awarded to&nbsp;two executives of the GM seed giants Monsanto and Syngenta, <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/10\/18\/outrage-follows-world-food-prize-award-gmo-scientists\/\" target=\"_blank\">provoking outrage<\/a>&nbsp;worldwide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1,57],"tags":[12201,9311,3061,12202],"class_list":["post-17686","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-green-building-posts","category-leed-news","tag-featured-living","tag-gmos","tag-health","tag-living"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/17686","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=17686"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/17686\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=17686"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=17686"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=17686"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
