The deadline is approaching to comment on new rules<\/a> proposed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These rules<\/a> will impact how fresh fruit and vegetables are grown and processed in the U.S.<\/p>\n

The FDA is accepting comments on the rules, part of the Food Safety Modernization Act<\/a>, through Nov. 15.<\/p>\n

The rules, as written, “will unfairly burden<\/a> family farmers, target sustainable and organic farming and reduce the availability of fresh, local food in our communities,” writes the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition<\/a>.<\/p>\n

National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, Farm Aid<\/a> and other organizations such as Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture<\/a> are joining together in a call to action<\/a> to get signatures for petitions that will ask the FDA to change the proposed rules so they do not put safe farms out of business; harm farmers’ soil, water and wildlife conservation efforts; or shut down the growth of local and regional healthy food systems.<\/p>\n
