This oil field was&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/csrwire.pr-optout.com\/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3D8%2B41%3C1-%3ELCE5%3A%2C66%3E%26SDG%3C90%3A.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=3646477&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=12291&amp;Action=Follow+Link\" target=\"_blank\">operated exclusively by Texaco<\/a>&nbsp;until it was abandoned in 1986. In 2001,&nbsp;Chevron acquired Texaco, along with all its liabilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Texaco had operations in Ecuador between 1964 and 1990. During this period, the company deliberately used substandard methods to handle toxic waste derived from oil production. During the Ecuadorian trial, expert findings&nbsp;showed that&nbsp;Chevron poured more than <a href=\"http:\/\/csrwire.pr-optout.com\/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3D8%2B41%3C1-%3ELCE5%3A%2C66%3E%26SDG%3C90%3A.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=3646477&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=12288&amp;Action=Follow+Link\" target=\"_blank\">18 billion gallons of toxic wastewater<\/a> into unlined pits, which contaminated the soil, underground water, rivers and streams.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The invitation to Glover and other world leaders stems from a&nbsp;campaign&nbsp;initiated last September by President Rafael Correa,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/justiceforecuador.com\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">Justice for Ecuador<\/a>, in reply to Chevron&rsquo;s attempts to discredit the Ecuadorian government&#8217;s verdict.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Glover will &ldquo;submerge his hand in one of the toxic pits that Chevron left in the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest,&rdquo; said&nbsp;Ecuador&rsquo;s vice president, Jorge Glass, to highlight the environmental <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/10\/15\/chevron-sues-rainforest-communities-it-contaminated\/\" target=\"_blank\">damage caused by Chevron<\/a> and the resulting conditions villagers and farmers have lived with for the past three decades.<\/p>\n<p>Glover, who served as Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Development Program from 1998 to 2004, and is currently serving as UNICEF Ambassador, is in Ecuador&nbsp;just weeks after a visit from Gayle McLaughlin, the mayor of Richmond, CA, according to the press release. The city of Richmond is <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/08\/08\/chevron-gets-slap-on-wrist-for-fire\/\" target=\"_blank\">involved in a legal battle with Chevron<\/a> over a massive fire in a local Refinery that sent nearly 15,000 people to local hospitals with respiratory problems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last month, human rights advocate Bianca Jagger <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/bianca-jagger\/ecuador-chevron-case_b_4098800.html\" target=\"_blank\">denounced<\/a> Chevron and joined a group of Ecuadorians and environmentalists in a rally in front of the Second District Court in New York City, where <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/10\/15\/chevron-sues-rainforest-communities-it-contaminated\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chevron is suing rainforest communities it contaminated<\/a>, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/amazonwatch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon Watch<\/a>.
