The tourist destination lies above Western Newfoundland&#8217;s shale oil reserves.[\/caption]\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/newfoundland-labrador\/fracking-on-hold-near-gros-morne-across-n-l-1.2355701\" target=\"_blank\">Western Newfoundland&rsquo;s<\/a>&nbsp;shale-oil deposits have been described as a potentially vast, but the region includes the Gros Morne National Park, which is a world heritage site and huge tourist attraction.<\/p>\n<p>Exploration licenses had already&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.calgaryherald.com\/business\/energy-resources\/Newfoundland+government+says+fracking\/9126762\/story.html?__lsa=00af-b75e\" target=\"_blank\">been granted<\/a>&nbsp;in the Green Point shale near the Park.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"http:\/\/en.unesco.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">UNESCO<\/a> had recently indicated&nbsp;that the Park&rsquo;s&nbsp;heritage status could be at risk if fracking is allowed to proceed near its boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our government will not be accepting applications for onshore and onshore to offshore petroleum exploration using hydraulic fracturing,&rdquo; said&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunnewsnetwork.ca\/sunnews\/politics\/archives\/2013\/11\/20131104-132030.html\" target=\"_blank\">Natural Resources<\/a>&nbsp;Minister Derrick Dalley in the State&rsquo;s House of Assembly on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our first consideration is the health and safety of our people,&#8221; Dalley added. &ldquo;In making this decision, our government is acting responsibly and respecting the balance between economic development and environmental protection.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Dalley said that the moratorium would allow the province to undertake a review of regulations, rules and guidelines in other jurisdictions. It would also involve public consultation.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition politicians approved the move. One New Democratic Party member,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/newfoundland-labrador\/fracking-on-hold-near-gros-morne-across-n-l-1.2355701\" target=\"_blank\">George Murphy<\/a>, said: &ldquo;It seemed like it was very rash, it seemed like it was very unconcerning the way they wanted to proceed with development.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>So did local anti-fracking groups: one member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlfan.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Newfoundland and Labrador Fracking Awareness Network<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/newfoundland-labrador\/fracking-opponents-pleased-with-n-l-decision-1.2415975\" target=\"_blank\">Angie Payne<\/a>,&nbsp;said: &ldquo;I think this is a really, really wise thing to do. Photo credit: Twitter\/ OCongres[\/caption]\n<p>The decision was said to have come as a surprise to&nbsp;Black Spruce&nbsp;Exploration and its partner Shoal Point energy, which wanted to frack in the west of the province.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the anti-fracking protests in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/o.canada.com\/news\/sacred-fire-blockade-planned-by-mikmaq-anti-fracking-protesters\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Brunswick<\/a>&nbsp;are continuing. The Mi&rsquo;kmaq Warrior Society, along with members of the Elsipogtog First Nation, are planning to light a &ldquo;sacred fire&rdquo; blockade to impede SWN Resources Canada from conducting testing in the province this week.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are here to save our <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/category\/water-news\/\" target=\"_blank\">water<\/a> and land, and to protect our animals and people.&rdquo; Louis Jerome,&nbsp;a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunnewsnetwork.ca\/sunnews\/canada\/archives\/2013\/11\/20131104-110008.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mi&rsquo;kmaq sun dancer<\/a>, said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There will be no fracking at all,&#8221; Jerome continued.&nbsp;&ldquo;We are putting a sacred fire here, and it must be respected.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>And yesterday, up to 650 people protested in front of the provincial legislature in Fredericton, demonstrating against fracking in the province.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They go into the community to exploit the people of the community,&rdquo; said&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/new-brunswick\/hundreds-of-shale-gas-opponents-demonstrate-at-legislature-1.2415397\" target=\"_blank\">protester Charles Richard<\/a>. &ldquo;Once they exploit them, take everything, they pack their bags and they go.
