Photo credit: Shutterstock\"><\/p>\n<p>A new U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.usda.gov\/AMSv1.0\/getfile?dDocName=STELPRDC5105492\">certification program<\/a>&nbsp;for livestock producers would permit them to market their products with a special label saying the meat contains no drugs called beta agonists&mdash;which some estimates say are fed to up to nearly 80 percent of U.S.-raised livestock.<\/p>\n<p>Beta agonists are <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/09\/18\/new-cdc-report-reiterates-that-antibiotics-in-agriculture-contribute-to-rise-of-superbugs\/\" target=\"_blank\">feed additives<\/a> used to increase muscle mass and promote weight gain in livestock animals. Photo credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/pic-6962191\/stock-photo-cattle-at-feed-lot-in-midwest.html\">Shutterstock<\/a>[\/caption]\n<p>Meat producers seeking the &ldquo;Never Fed Beta Agonists&#8221; label&nbsp;would be required to document to USDA&rsquo;s Agricultural Marketing Service that they haven&rsquo;t given growth enhancers to their animals and that the meat contains no residues of the controversial drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Commonly used growth-enhancing drugs in the beta-agonist family include&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ractopamine\">ractopamine<\/a>, which is fed to hogs and <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/11\/13\/green-your-holidays-by-supporting-independent-poultry-farmers\/\" target=\"_blank\">turkeys<\/a>, and zilpaterol, which is fed to cattle.&nbsp;Trademarked beta agonists include Zilmax and Optaflexx, with one of the two being administered&nbsp; to 70 percent to 80 percent of the U.S. cattle herd in 2012,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cargill.com\/news\/cargill-view-on-zilmax-being-pulled-from-the-market\/index.jsp\">according to some estimates<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The use of beta agonists for finishing cattle became a concern over the summer when Merck, the makers of Zilmax, suspended sales due to animal welfare concerns from packers.&nbsp;Tyson Foods stopped buying&nbsp;Zilmax-fed cattle in September because cattle had been delivered to its plants having trouble walking or being unable to move.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2012, animal-rights and food-safety groups&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.centerforfoodsafety.org\/files\/fda-petitionractopamine12202012-final-e-signatures_46780.pdf\">petitioned the FDA<\/a>&nbsp;to lower the allowed residue limits for ractopamine and study the drug&rsquo;s effects on human health and animal welfare.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The continued use and abuse of ractopamine in our food supply needs to be put in check,&rdquo; said Elisabeth Holmes, staff attorney at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centerforfoodsafety.org\/#\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Food Safety<\/a>, which filed the 37-page petition in concert with the <a href=\"http:\/\/aldf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Animal Legal Defense Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/topnewsbanner11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"topnewsbanner1\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/topnewsbanner11.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"120\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1,57],"tags":[2909,12201,1791,12202],"class_list":["post-18801","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-green-building-posts","category-leed-news","tag-factory-farming","tag-featured-living","tag-food","tag-living"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/18801","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=18801"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/18801\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=18801"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=18801"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=18801"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
