{"id":18811,"date":"2013-11-14T17:32:40","date_gmt":"2013-11-14T17:32:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/?p=312083"},"modified":"2013-11-14T17:32:40","modified_gmt":"2013-11-14T17:32:40","slug":"414-cities-take-action-against-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/414-cities-take-action-against-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"414 Cities Take Action Against Climate Change"},"content":{"rendered":null,"protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/map-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"Graphic credit: carbonn Cities Climate Registry\"><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no secret that tackling the global <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/11\/09\/watershed-moment-global-climate-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\">climate change<\/a> issue will take lots of dedication at the local level in nations all over the planet.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a long haul, but a November report discussed at the&nbsp;ongoing <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/11\/12\/extreme-weather-risk-index-unveiled-un-climate-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\">United Nations Warsaw 19th Conference of the Parties<\/a> (COP 19)<em>&nbsp;<\/em>on climate&nbsp;shows that <a href=\"http:\/\/relaunch.citiesclimateregistry.org\/data\/\" target=\"_blank\">414 cities<\/a> made 4,000 actions to do their part in battling climate change by 2020. Some of those goals are completed, and 63 percent of the reduction commitments are above 1 percent per year.<\/p>\n<p>To&nbsp;Yunus Arikan, advocacy head for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iclei.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">ICLEI<\/a>, data in the carbonn&nbsp;Cities Climate Registry&#8217;s (cCCR)&nbsp;report shows that these cities have raised the global level of ambition with proposals that could lead to a global emissions deal in&nbsp;2015 when COP 21 takes place in Paris, France. More than half of those actions were funded by the municipalities&#8217; own resources.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Cities are ambitious and are actively delivering climate actions that the world can count on,&rdquo; Arikan said.<\/p>\n[caption id=\"attachment_312097\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"736\"]<a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Screen-Shot-2013-11-14-at-10.54.25-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Graphic credit: carbonn Cities Climate Registry\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Screen-Shot-2013-11-14-at-10.54.25-AM.png\" width=\"736\" height=\"374\"><\/a> Graphic credit: carbonn Cities Climate Registry[\/caption]\n<p>Vancouver, Canada topped the list for its comprehensive climate change adaptation strategy and work on providing more&nbsp;green jobs, eco-friendly modes of transport and urban food security.&nbsp;The city was also named&nbsp;Vancouver was named the 2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/earthhour.org\/ehcc-vancouver\" target=\"_blank\">Earth Hour Capital<\/a> in March. By 2020, the city wants all of its&nbsp;new buildings to be carbon-neutral; residents to make of their trips by foot, bicycle or public transportation; and the number of green jobs to double.<\/p>\n<p>The report also singled out Buenos Aires, Argentina for ensuring transparency as it pursues lower emissions. The cCSR lauded city&#8217;s building code, which produced a 40 percent efficiency improvement in governmental buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Copenhagen, Denmark officials have also issued a challenge to become a carbon-neutral city by 2030 by enforcing energy certification&nbsp;policies, more <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/category\/green-building-business\/\" target=\"_blank\">green building<\/a> and reducing emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The 414 cities&mdash;with a combined population of about 438 million&mdash;increased their climate and energy commitments by nearly 300 in the past year.
