Figuring out how to feed all these people&mdash;while advancing rural development, reducing <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/02\/06\/epa-greenhouse-gas-emitters\/\" target=\"_blank\">greenhouse gas emissions<\/a> and protecting valuable ecosystems&mdash;is one of the greatest challenges of our era.<\/p>\n<p>So what&rsquo;s causing the global food challenge, and how can the world solve it?&nbsp;Here, courtesy of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wri.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Resources Institute<\/a>&nbsp;(WRI), is a summary told in 18 graphics.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, check out <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wri.org\/publication\/creating-sustainable-food-future-interim-findings\">Creating a Sustainable Food Future: Interim Findings<\/a>,&nbsp;<\/em>a report produced by WRI, U.N. Environment Programme, U.N. Development Programme and the World Bank.<\/p>\n<p>First, let&#8217;s examine what&#8217;s causing the global food crisis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feeding an Exploding Population<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The world&rsquo;s population is <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2012\/06\/08\/is-the-current-rate-of-population-growth-sustainable\/\" target=\"_blank\">projected to grow <\/a>from about 7 billion in 2012 to 9.6 billion people in 2050. More than half of this growth will occur in sub-Saharan Africa, a region where one-quarter of the population is undernourished.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/popgrowfi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"popgrowfi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/popgrowfi.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"454\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;Shifting Diets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to population growth, the world&rsquo;s per capita <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/11\/12\/how-eating-meat-increases-demand-for-soybeans-and-threatens-the-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\">meat and milk consumption<\/a> also is growing, especially in China and India, and is projected to remain high in the European Union, North America, Brazil and Russia. These foods are more resource-intensive to produce than plant-based diets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/dietsfi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"dietsfi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/dietsfi.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"454\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Food Gap<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Taking into account a growing population and shifting diets, the world will need to produce 69 percent more food calories in 2050 than it did in 2006.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/gapfi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"gapfi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/gapfi.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"454\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;It&rsquo;s Not a Distribution Problem<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We can&rsquo;t just redistribute food to close the food gap. Even if we took all the food produced in 2009 and distributed it evenly among the global population, the world will still need to produce 974 more calories per person per day by 2050.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/distributionfi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"distributionfi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/distributionfi.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"424\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Agriculture&rsquo;s Environmental Footprint<\/h4>\n<p>But we can&rsquo;t just produce more food in the same way as today. We must reduce <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/11\/19\/factory-farming-bad-for-people-planet-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\">food&rsquo;s environmental impact<\/a>. Agriculture contributes nearly one-quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions, uses 37 percent of landmass (excluding Antarctica) and accounts for 70 percent of all freshwater withdrawn from rivers, lakes and aquifers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/impactfi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"impactfi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/impactfi.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"395\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Climate Change and Water Stress Exacerbate the Challenge<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/category\/climate-change-news\/\" target=\"_blank\">Climate change<\/a> is expected to negatively impact crop yields, particularly in the hungriest parts of the world such as sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/yieldsfi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"yieldsfi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/yieldsfi.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"464\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Growing water use and rising temperatures are expected to further increase <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/10\/08\/climate-change-puts-billion-at-risk-of-water-scarcity\/\" target=\"_blank\">water stress<\/a> in many agricultural areas by 2025.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/waterfi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"waterfi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/waterfi.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"547\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>The Energy-Food Nexus<\/h4>\n<p>Another major challenge is <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/07\/24\/corn-ethanol-harms-consumers-climate-renewables\/http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2012\/08\/10\/food-versus-fuel-debate\/\" target=\"_parent\">biofuels&rsquo;<\/a> competition for land and crops. Producing 10 percent of all transport fuels from biofuels by 2050, as planned by some governments, would require 32 percent of global crop production but produce only 2 percent of global energy. It also would increase the food gap to roughly 100 percent. Conversely, eliminating the use of crop-based <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/07\/24\/corn-ethanol-harms-consumers-climate-renewables\/\" target=\"_blank\">biofuels<\/a> for transportation would close the food gap by roughly 14 percent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/biofuelsfi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"biofuelsfi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/biofuelsfi.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"366\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Food&rsquo;s Role in Economic Development<\/h4>\n<p>Around 2 billion people are employed in agriculture, many of them poor. We need to close the food gap in ways that enhance the livelihoods of farmers, especially the poorest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/employmentfi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"employmentfi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/employmentfi.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"413\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>The &ldquo;Great Balancing Act&rdquo;<\/h4>\n<p>Achieving a sustainable food future, then, requires meeting three needs simultaneously: closing the food gap, supporting economic development and reducing agriculture&rsquo;s environmental impact.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/actfi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"actfi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/actfi.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"361\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, let&#8217;s look at solutions.<\/p>\n<h4>Reduce Food Loss and Waste<\/h4>\n<p>Roughly one-quarter of world&rsquo;s food calories are <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/10\/02\/food-waste-rank-no-3-for-greenhouse-gas-emissions\/\" target=\"_blank\">lost or wasted<\/a> between field and fork. Cutting this rate in half could close the food gap by about 20 percent by 2050.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/lossfi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"lossfi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/lossfi.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"435\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Shift to Healthier Diets<\/h4>\n<p>Beef is the <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/11\/19\/factory-farming-bad-for-people-planet-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\">least efficient<\/a> source of calories and protein, generating six times more greenhouse gas emissions per unit of protein than pork, chicken and egg production. Shifting just 20 percent of the anticipated future global consumption of beef to other meats, fish or dairy could spare hundreds of millions of hectares of forest and savannah.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/emissions1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"emissions1\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/emissions1.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"454\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Achieve Replacement Level Fertility<\/h4>\n<p>Reducing population growth can help hold down food demand. While most regions are projected to reach replacement level fertility&mdash;or the rate at which a population exactly replaces itself from one generation to the next&mdash;sub-Saharan Africa&rsquo;s population is on course to more than double between now and 2050.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/fertilityfi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"fertilityfi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/fertilityfi.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Boost Crop Yields<\/h4>\n<p>Boosting yields is particularly important in sub-Saharan Africa, which has world&rsquo;s lowest cereal yields but will account for one-third of all additional calories needed in 2050.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/yieldsfi1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"yieldsfi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/yieldsfi1.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Improve Land and Water Management<\/h4>\n<p>Conservation agriculture, such as reduced tillage, crop rotations and mulching, increased maize yields in Malawi. Combining these techniques with agroforestry&mdash;intercropping with trees&mdash;further increased yields. These practices could be scaled up on more than 300 million hectares in sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/maizefi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"maizefi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/maizefi.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"269\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Shift Agriculture to Degraded Lands<\/h4>\n<p>Shifting agriculture land expansion to degraded lands can prevent <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/10\/30\/forest-destruction-land-grabbing-uk-biomass-demand\/\" target=\"_blank\">deforestation<\/a>, protect resources and curb climate change. For example, more than 14 million hectares of low-carbon degraded lands in Kalimantan, Indonesia are potentially suitable for <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/11\/10\/palm-oil-orangutans-enslaving-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\">oil palm development<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/degradedfi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"degradedfi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/degradedfi.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"454\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Increase Aquaculture&rsquo;s Productivity<\/h4>\n<p>As wild fish catches have <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/06\/17\/are-there-plenty-of-fish-in-the-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\">plateaued<\/a>, aquaculture has expanded, producing nearly half of fish consumed in 2009. To grow in a sustainable way, aquaculture will need to produce more fish per unit of land and water and reduce its reliance on wild-caught fish for feed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/fishfi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"fishfi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/fishfi.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"390\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Closing the Food Gap<\/h4>\n<p>No one solution can create a sustainable food future. A menu of consumption- and production-focused strategies, including those presented here, can close the food gap and generate environmental, health and development co-benefits.
