It is also an economic lifeline for many of the region&rsquo;s small island states.<\/p>\n<p>Tuna are among the world&rsquo;s most popular fish and among the most commercially valuable. But because of high demand for this fish, many stocks are overfished, the World Wildlife Federation <a href=\"http:\/\/worldwildlife.org\/industries\/tuna\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/01\/09\/bluefin-tuna-population\/\" target=\"_blank\">more and more boats<\/a> are entering the fishery from developed nations eager to profit from this $7 billion per year fishery. Click on the image to view a larger version.<\/p>\n[caption id=\"attachment_314138\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"500\"]<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/Global\/international\/artwork\/oceans\/2013\/GPI-TradeInfographic-DEF-standalone150dpi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"tunafi\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/tunafi.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"355\"><\/a> Click on the image to view a larger version.[\/caption]\n<p>The root cause of the record low level of <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2012\/10\/31\/unreported-bluefin-tuna-exposed\/\" target=\"_blank\">tuna stocks<\/a> is too many boats with improved tuna plundering technology and efficiency.&nbsp;Close to half of bigeye tuna caught in the region every year is taken by purse seine vessels that use dragnets to catch fish. The vessels are supposed to be targeting the more resilient skipjack tuna. But in the process they also catch bigeye tuna that haven&rsquo;t had a chance to reach adulthood and reproduce.<\/p>\n<p>More than 3,600 longline vessels are registered to fish in the Pacific under scant regulation, often transshipping their catches at sea, resulting in prolific illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing in the region.
