a&nbsp;Dec. 6 <a href=\"http:\/\/businessjournaldaily.com\/drilling-down\/aubrey-mcclendon-marches-ahead-utica-shale-play-2013-12-6\" target=\"_blank\">article appearing<\/a> in&nbsp;<em>The Business Journal<\/em>&nbsp;explained. &#8220;In October, American Energy Utica announced it has raised $1.7 billion in capital to secure new leases in the Utica shale play.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>McClendon is the former CEO of fracking giant Chesapeake Energy and now the owner of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanenergypartners.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">American Energy Partners<\/a>,&nbsp;whose&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanenergypartners.com\/contact.php\" target=\"_blank\">office<\/a>&nbsp;is located&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?saddr=301+N.W.+63rd,+Suite+600+Oklahoma+City,+OK+73116&amp;daddr=Chesapeake+Energy+Corporation,+North+Western+Avenue,+Oklahoma+City,+OK&amp;hl=en&amp;sll=35.535976,-97.524126&amp;sspn=0.009272,0.01929&amp;geocode=FRFCHgIdnfwv-ikPiX05jxmyhzGIOac2s-2yDQ%3BFTg3HgIdCdUv-iFsjxnsgMWCNyk3xyOVJhqyhzFsjxnsgMWCNw&amp;oq=chesapeake+energy+ok+city&amp;t=h&amp;gl=us&amp;mra=ls&amp;z=16\" target=\"_blank\">less than a mile away<\/a>&nbsp;from&nbsp;Chesapeake&#8217;s corporate headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2013-10-09\/mcclendon-raises-1-7-billion-for-utica-acquisitions.html\" target=\"_blank\">$1.7 billion McClendon has received in capital<\/a>&nbsp;investments for the purchase of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2013\/10\/09\/us-americanenergy-utica-idUSBRE9980N020131009\" target=\"_blank\">110,000 acres<\/a>&nbsp;worth of Utica Shale land came from the&nbsp;Energy &amp; Minerals Group,&nbsp;First Reserve Corporation,&nbsp;BlackRock Inc. and&nbsp;Magnetar Capital.<\/p>\n<p>McClendon&mdash;a central figure in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Frackers-Outrageous-Billionaire-Wildcatters\/dp\/1591846455\" target=\"_blank\">Gregory Zuckerman&#8217;s recent book<\/a> <em>The Frackers<\/em>&mdash;is&nbsp;currently under <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news9.com\/story\/21437935\/sec-launches-investigation-in-chesapeake-energy\" target=\"_blank\">investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission<\/a>.&nbsp;He left&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/dealbook.nytimes.com\/2013\/01\/29\/chesapeakes-chief-to-retire\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chesapeake in Jan. 2013<\/a>&nbsp;following shareholder upset over controversial business practices.<\/p>\n<p>He was given a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/McClendonSeverancePackage.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">$35 million severance package<\/a>, access to the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/newsok.com\/filing-outlines-details-of-aubrey-mcclendons-separation-agreement-with-chesapeake-energy\/article\/3791099\" target=\"_blank\">company&#8217;s private jets<\/a> through 2016&nbsp;and a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/newsok.com\/filing-outlines-details-of-aubrey-mcclendons-separation-agreement-with-chesapeake-energy\/article\/3791099\" target=\"_blank\">2.5 percent stake in every well<\/a>&nbsp;Chesapeake fracks through June 2014 as part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/04\/26\/us-chesapeake-idUSBRE83P0PX20120426\" target=\"_blank\">Founder&#8217;s Well Participation Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Little discussed&nbsp;beyond the <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/news\/articles\/SB10001424052702304384104579141660140889036\" target=\"_blank\">business press<\/a>, McClendon has teamed up with a prominent business partner for his new start-up: former&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Private-Empire-ExxonMobil-American-Power\/dp\/B00CVE2NQ2\" target=\"_blank\">ExxonMobil<\/a>&nbsp;CEO Lee Raymond.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Power Mapping McClendon&#8217;s New Venture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Lee] Raymond has emerged as a director alongside Mr. McClendon in American Energy Ohio Holdings LLC&#8230; according to&nbsp;[an SEC] <a href=\"http:\/\/pdf.secdatabase.com\/1501\/0001589215-13-000001.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">regulatory filing<\/a>,&#8221;&nbsp;<em>The Wall Street Journal&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/news\/articles\/SB10001424052702304384104579141660140889036\" target=\"_blank\">reported in October<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The former Exxon CEO&#8217;s brother <a href=\"http:\/\/investing.businessweek.com\/research\/stocks\/private\/person.asp?personId=866250\" target=\"_blank\">John Raymond<\/a>&nbsp;is the&nbsp;Managing Partner, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Executive Officer&nbsp;of Minerals &amp; Energy Group, currently the largest capital investor in McClendon&#8217;s&nbsp;start-up venture and is also a partner in McClendon&#8217;s new venture.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/ryan-turner\/4\/146\/8a3\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Turner<\/a>, Chesapeake&#8217;s Stock Plan Manager&nbsp;has also&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/pdf.secdatabase.com\/1501\/0001589215-13-000001.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">joined the team as a partner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jefferies Group LLC gave financial advice to American Energy&#8221;&nbsp;for the deal,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2013-10-09\/mcclendon-raises-1-7-billion-for-utica-acquisitions.html\" target=\"_blank\">according to&nbsp;<em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>&mdash;and is listed as such on&nbsp;American Energy Ohio Holdings LLC&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/pdf.secdatabase.com\/1501\/0001589215-13-000001.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">SEC Form D<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/investing.businessweek.com\/research\/stocks\/private\/person.asp?personId=316785&amp;privcapId=1306474\" target=\"_blank\">Ralph Eads III<\/a>&mdash;McClendon&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/giving.duke.edu\/development\/campaign\/benchmark\/bench13\/Profile.html\" target=\"_blank\">fraternity brother at Duke University<\/a>&mdash;serves as&nbsp;Global Head of Energy Investment Banking at Jefferies Group, Inc.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mr. Eads&#8230;is a prince of this world,&#8221;&nbsp;the&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/10\/21\/business\/energy-environment\/in-a-natural-gas-glut-big-winners-and-losers.html\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> in Oct. 2012.&nbsp;&#8220;His financial innovations helped feed the gas drilling boom, and he has participated in $159 billion worth of oil and gas deals since 2007.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Eads&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ragingchickenpress.org\/2012\/05\/22\/aubrey-and-ralph-bffs\/\" target=\"_blank\">maintained tight financial ties<\/a> with McClendon when he was at the helm of Chesapeake Energy.
