{"id":20537,"date":"2014-01-06T15:43:28","date_gmt":"2014-01-06T15:43:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/?p=317051"},"modified":"2014-01-06T15:43:28","modified_gmt":"2014-01-06T15:43:28","slug":"spain-achieves-clean-energy-breakthrough-wind-supplies-more-power-than-any-other-source","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/spain-achieves-clean-energy-breakthrough-wind-supplies-more-power-than-any-other-source\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain Achieves Clean Energy Breakthrough: Wind Supplies More Power Than Any Other Source"},"content":{"rendered":null,"protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/files.cdn.ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/spainwind-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Photo courtesy of Shutterstock\"><\/p>\n<p>Wind energy is now king in Spain, officials revealed in a recent report.<\/p>\n<p>Wind power narrowly beat out nuclear in 2013 as the top source of energy, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ree.es\/en\" target=\"_blank\">Red El&eacute;ctrica de Espa&ntilde;a<\/a>&nbsp;(REE), the transmission agent and operator of the Spanish electricity system.&nbsp;Wind met&nbsp;21.1 percent of the country&#8217;s demand, compared to 21 percent for nuclear.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Throughout 2013, the all-time highs of wind power production were exceeded,&#8221; according to the report. &#8220;On Feb. 6, wind power&nbsp;recorded a new maximum of instantaneous power with 17,056 megawatts (MW) at 3:49 p.m. (2.5 percent up on the previous&nbsp;record registered in April 2012), and that same day the all-time maximum for hourly energy was also exceeded&nbsp;reaching 16,918 MW hours (MWh).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Similarly, in January, February, March and November wind power generation was the&nbsp;technology that made the largest contribution towards the total energy production of the system.&#8221;<\/p>\n[caption id=\"attachment_317054\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"500\"]<a href=\"http:\/\/files.cdn.ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Screen-Shot-2014-01-06-at-10.17.22-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Graphic credit: Red El&eacute;ctrica de Espa&ntilde;a\" src=\"http:\/\/files.cdn.ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Screen-Shot-2014-01-06-at-10.17.22-AM.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"214\"><\/a> Graphic credit: Red El&eacute;ctrica de Espa&ntilde;a[\/caption]\n<p>Wind turbines and farms generated 53,926 gigawatt hours of electricity&mdash;a 12-percent increase from last year.<\/p>\n<p>Renewable energy also accounted for a whopping&nbsp;49.1 percent of total&nbsp;installed capacity on the Spanish peninsula. That figure was encouraged by increases of 173 MW and 140 MW for wind and solar, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Overall demand in the country dropped by&nbsp;2.1 percent.
