{"id":20588,"date":"2014-01-07T20:59:37","date_gmt":"2014-01-07T20:59:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/?p=317195"},"modified":"2014-01-07T20:59:37","modified_gmt":"2014-01-07T20:59:37","slug":"evs-vs-horse-drawn-carriages-in-new-yorks-central-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/evs-vs-horse-drawn-carriages-in-new-yorks-central-park\/","title":{"rendered":"EVs vs. Horse-Drawn Carriages in New York\u2019s Central Park"},"content":{"rendered":null,"protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/files.cdn.ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/horserides-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"Photo credit: Power Trip Berkeley.\"><\/p>\n<p>While there are plenty of carriage drivers and tourists who aren&#8217;t happy with one of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio&#8217;s first orders of business, <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/12\/12\/americans-evs-drive\/\" target=\"_blank\">electric vehicle<\/a> (EV) proponents would likely approve of the newcomer&#8217;s comments.<\/p>\n<p>De Blasio said he would&nbsp;&#8220;quickly and aggressively&#8221; work to get rid of the tradition of horse carriage rides&nbsp;around Central Park, replacing them with electric vehicles. He&#8217;ll try to maintain the classic feel of those trips by deploying EVs that are replicas of antique cars from the early 1900s.<\/p>\n[caption id=\"attachment_317198\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"500\"]<a href=\"http:\/\/files.cdn.ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/horserides.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Photo credit: Power Trip Berkeley.\" src=\"http:\/\/files.cdn.ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/horserides.jpeg\" width=\"500\" height=\"300\"><\/a> Photo credit: Power Trip Berkeley.[\/caption]\n<p>De Blasio hasn&#8217;t said much about the advantages of EVs. He mostly wants to incorporate EVs into the tours because he believes using horse carriages is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billdeblasio.com\/issues\/humane-city\" target=\"_blank\">unfair to the animals<\/a>. There are about 220 horses working in New York, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/banning-horse-drawn-carriages-an-early-focus-for-new-yorks-new-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>CBS<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are going to get rid of the horse carriages, period,&rdquo; he said at a pre-inauguration <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/nyc-war-over-de-blasios-ban-central-park-horse-drawn-carriages-1526286\" target=\"_blank\">press conference<\/a>. &ldquo;They are not humane, they are not appropriate for the year 2014. It&rsquo;s over. So, just watch us do it.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>A 2007&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2007\/09\/06\/audit-of-horse-drawn-carriage-business-finds-inconsistencies\/\" target=\"_blank\">study&nbsp;<\/a>from the city comptroller concluded that there weren&#8217;t &ldquo;any serious violations regarding the health and safety of the horses when we accompanied them to the stables.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from the Teamsters union representing the carriage drivers said they aren&#8217;t opposed to EVs, but don&#8217;t believe the workers would be interested in transitioning from the horses to de Blasio&#8217;s plan. The mayor said he would preserve jobs, inviting carriage drivers to man the antique EVs.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are against the thought of the electric car replacing the horse carriage industry,&#8221;&nbsp;Demos Demopoulos, secretary\/treasurer and executive officer of Teamsters Local No. 553, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2013\/12\/new-york-city-political-brawl-carriage-horses-101555_Page2.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>told Politico<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If and and when EVs do replace the horses that stroll Central Park as part of the city&#8217;s $37 billion tourism industry, it will come after a long, political battle that includes city council hopefuls, animal advocacy groups, union leaders, property owners and more.<\/p>\n<p>New York recently approved a law requiring&nbsp;owners of new off-street parking lots and garages to supply 20 percent of their spaces with charging ports with a minimum capacity of 3.1 kilowatts. There are just 200 such spaces now, but former mayor Michael Bloomberg said he believed the city could grow that number to 10,000 by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>New York estimates that 44 percent of the city&rsquo;s greenhouse gas emissions will come from the transportation sector by 2030, according to the legislation.
