{"id":21487,"date":"2014-01-30T02:43:30","date_gmt":"2014-01-30T02:43:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/?p=319647"},"modified":"2014-01-30T02:43:30","modified_gmt":"2014-01-30T02:43:30","slug":"11-arrested-at-monsanto-protest-outside-shareholder-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/11-arrested-at-monsanto-protest-outside-shareholder-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"11 Arrested at Monsanto Protest Outside Shareholder Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":null,"protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/files.cdn.ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/fishyfi-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"fishyfi\"><\/p>\n<p>Dozens of protestors from around the globe rallied against <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/04\/03\/monsanto-corporate-profile-sheds-light-ge-giant\/\" target=\"_blank\">Monsanto<\/a>, the world&#8217;s largest seed company, on Tuesday urging its shareholders to consider the risks of growing and consuming genetically modified crops.<\/p>\n<p>[blackoutgallery id=&#8221;319684&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>Protestors, with signs in hand, converged at the Monsanto headquarters in suburban St. Louis, MO during the company&#8217;s annual investors meeting in support of two shareholder resolutions that questioned the level of contamination passed onto non-GMO (<a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/category\/news\/agriculture-news\/food-agriculture\/gmo-genetically-modified-organism\/\" target=\"_blank\">genetically modified organisms<\/a>) crops and requested the seed giant end its fight against mandatory labels on foods containing GMO ingredients, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2014\/01\/29\/us-usa-monsanto-gmos-idUSBREA0S03I20140129\" target=\"_blank\">reports Reuters.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The resolutions failed by considerable margins and 11 protestors were arrested after attempting to disrupt traffic near the Monsanto gates.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Right now there&rsquo;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2014\/01\/21\/new-hampshire-gmo-labeling\/\" target=\"_blank\">growing movement to label genetically modified food<\/a>,&rdquo; said Dave Murphy, executive director of Food Democracy Now!, who presented the labeling proposal at Tuesday&#8217;s shareholder meeting &ldquo;Monsanto has chosen unfortunately to resist the rights of American people.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Over the last two years, Monsanto has spent more than $13.4 million to defeat GMO labeling efforts in California and Washington state, said Murphy.<\/p>\n<p>Shareholder Adam Eidinger introduced the labeling resolution, hoping to get at least 7 percent of investors to support it, but wound up with just 4 percent, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/business\/local\/monsanto-says-gmo-shareholder-resolutions-fail\/article_c0c6c23f-e5c0-5b07-b6a7-e8c733f99ae7.html\" target=\"_blank\">St. Louis Post-Dispatch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The second resolution, introduced by shareholder John Harrington, focused on Monsanto&rsquo;s potential liability to organic farmers. It received just 6.5 percent support from investors.<\/p>\n<p>Live audio of the shareholder meeting, which was broadcast for the first time on the internet, also attracted Monsanto supporters, reports the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/corporate-intelligence\/2014\/01\/28\/monsanto-ceo-we-need-to-do-more-to-win-gmo-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Justin Danhof, general counsel for the National Center for Public Policy Research, told <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/corporate-intelligence\/2014\/01\/28\/monsanto-ceo-we-need-to-do-more-to-win-gmo-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\">WSJ.com<\/a> the protest was a &ldquo;campaign of junk science&rdquo; against biotech foods.&nbsp;Danhof insisted Monsanto combat the environmentalist outcry by enlisting its scientists as spokespeople on talk radio and other media to create an open conversation with the public.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2014\/01\/29\/us-usa-monsanto-gmos-idUSBREA0S03I20140129\" target=\"_blank\">According to Reuters<\/a>, the protest resolutions&nbsp;were backed by environmental, food safety and consumer activist groups. Protestors said that 2.6 million members of those groups support the anti-GMO initiative.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s time that Monsanto join the 21st century and allow Americans the basic right to know what&#8217;s in their food, something that&#8217;s already done in 64 other countries around the world.
