{"id":22236,"date":"2014-02-18T19:04:14","date_gmt":"2014-02-18T19:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/?p=322008"},"modified":"2014-02-18T19:04:14","modified_gmt":"2014-02-18T19:04:14","slug":"dr-oz-advocates-gmo-labeling-discusses-dangers-of-genetically-engineered-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/dr-oz-advocates-gmo-labeling-discusses-dangers-of-genetically-engineered-food\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Oz Advocates GMO-Labeling, Discusses Dangers of Genetically-Engineered Food"},"content":{"rendered":null,"protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/files.cdn.ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/DrOzGMO-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"DrOzGMO\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Nearly 70 percent of the food available for purchase at supermarkets contains GMOs (genetically modified organisms), which equates to about two million GMO food products for sale, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctoroz.com\/episode\/no-gmos-global-conspiracy-keep-you-knowing-truth-about-your-food?video_id=3197698333001\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Oz Show.<\/a><\/p>\n[caption id=\"attachment_322036\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"500\"]<a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/category\/news\/agriculture-news\/food-agriculture\/gmo-genetically-modified-organism\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"DrOzGMO\" src=\"http:\/\/files.cdn.ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/DrOzGMO.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"300\"><\/a> On Feb. 13, Dr. Oz aired a special on GMO foods, their risks and how to spot them in the supermarket.[\/caption]\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The food industry claims these GMOs help create bigger, less expensive crops that are more immune to plant diseases, and the Food and Drug Administration and the <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/11\/07\/big-foods-secret-plan-to-kill-gmo-labeling\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Grocery Manufacturing Association <\/span><\/a>have stated GMO foods are safe, said Oz.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">However, millions of <span>people<\/span> disagree and are fighting for something the food industry is spending millions to prevent<span>&mdash;<\/span>the <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/12\/12\/next-steps-ge-food-labeling\/\" target=\"_blank\">labeling of each and every GMO food product<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Sixty-four <\/span>countries (about two-thirds of the world&#8217;s population) have approved GMO labeling, and the Grocery Manufacturers Association is now working with Congress on a federal GMO-labeling solution.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Critics say consumers have the right to know which products contain GMOs since the <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2014\/02\/18\/dow-chemical-agent-orange-crops\/\" target=\"_blank\">pesticide-resistant crops<\/a> that produce the food they buy have typically been doused and coated in hazardous, bug-killing chemicals.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Over time, insects have adapted to the pesticides, which have led to an exponential use of these chemicals that are known to cause brain, reproductive and hormonal complications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&ldquo;Over the last decade, the amount of pesticides that we have used has jumped from about one million pounds a year to close to 100 million pounds a year,&rdquo; said Oz.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>How to spot GMO foods<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The best ways to avoid GMO foods is to buy organic and look for products that bear the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nongmoproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Non-GMO Project Verified seal<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The stickers found on fruits and vegetables can clarify whether or not the food has been genetically engineered.
