{"id":22587,"date":"2014-02-25T17:57:47","date_gmt":"2014-02-25T17:57:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/?p=323080"},"modified":"2014-02-25T17:57:47","modified_gmt":"2014-02-25T17:57:47","slug":"barge-oil-spill-closes-65-miles-of-mississippi-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/barge-oil-spill-closes-65-miles-of-mississippi-river\/","title":{"rendered":"Barge Oil Spill Closes 65 Miles of Mississippi River"},"content":{"rendered":null,"protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/files.cdn.ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/ledfiss-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"ledfiss\"><\/p>\n<p>Saturday, an oil barge traveling down the Mississippi River&nbsp;near Vacherie, LA, crashed into another boat causing an oil spill and closing a 65-mile stretch of the river while officials assessed the damage, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2014\/feb\/24\/mississippi-river-new-orleans-oil-spill\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;<em>The Guardian.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[blackoutgallery id=&#8221;323087&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 31,500 gallons of light crude oil spilled into the Mississippi River as a result of the collision, <a href=\"http:\/\/coastguardnews.com\/coast-guard-continues-response-to-barge-collision-on-lower-mississippi-river\/2014\/02\/24\/\" target=\"_blank\">according to the U.S. Coast Guard<\/a>. Wildlife impacts are still relatively unknown.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Response crews [have] strategically deployed containment boom to protect the water intakes for three parishes in the affected area,&#8221; said the U.S. Coast Guard. &#8220;All impacted water intake facilities in the affected area are taking precautionary measures to prevent contamination. As of Monday, there are no reports of contamination to drinking water.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Parts of the river were reopened&nbsp;with restrictions&nbsp;to water traffic yesterday afternoon.&nbsp;The cause of the incident is under investigation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This latest oil spill is just one of many in a growing list of recent fossil fuel related accidents. 2013 saw a <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2014\/01\/27\/more-oil-spilled-from-railcars-2013\/\" target=\"_blank\">record number of crude-by-rail accidents<\/a>, with spilled oil totaling 1.15 million gallons&mdash;more than in the previous four decades combined.
