{"id":22933,"date":"2014-03-04T16:38:11","date_gmt":"2014-03-04T16:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/?p=324272"},"modified":"2014-03-04T16:38:11","modified_gmt":"2014-03-04T16:38:11","slug":"and-the-winner-is-for-best-sustainable-food-and-farming-documentary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/and-the-winner-is-for-best-sustainable-food-and-farming-documentary\/","title":{"rendered":"And the Winner is \u2026 for Best Sustainable Food and Farming Documentary"},"content":{"rendered":null,"protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/files.cdn.ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/realfood-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"realfood\"><\/p>\n<p>An impressive selection of <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2014\/02\/27\/sustainable-food-farming-documentaries-vote-favorite\/\" target=\"_blank\">food and farming stories<\/a> from across North America took top honors in the first annual <a href=\"http:\/\/realfoodmedia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Real Food Media Contest<\/a>, which announced its final five winners on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Cash prizes totaling $10,000 were awarded to the top five short films, chosen from more than 150 submissions.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>&#8220;The winning films, though diverse in style, perspective and place, share common themes:&nbsp;revival of pride in farming as a way of life, resilience of rural communities and cities growing food sustainably, and renewal of respect for the labor and natural resources at the heart of food production,&#8221; according to a Real Food Media Contest press release.<\/p>\n<p>The winning films are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Grand prize: <em>Homeward<\/em>, by Daniel Klein and Mirra Fine of The Perennial Plate in Minneapolis, MN.<\/p>\n<p>Tired of seeing friends and family leaving their community in Mexico for the U.S. entrepreneurial farmers in Hidalgo created a thriving cooperative, keeping their families together with organic oregano.<\/p>\n<p>As the grand prize winner, <em>Homeward<\/em> will be screened at&nbsp;the <a href=\"http:\/\/smallplanet.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8eec5cd5151a8346637209ddf&amp;id=573c91f7b7&amp;e=446b1b4a7f\" target=\"_blank\">Food &amp; Farm Film Fest<\/a>&nbsp;in San Francisco, CA next month.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>First runner-up and &#8220;People&rsquo;s Choice&#8221; winner: <em>Green Bronx Machine<\/em>* by Brendan Van Meter of Suffern, NY.<\/p>\n<p><em>Green Bronx Machine<\/em> feeds the minds, hearts and stomachs of students in the poorest congressional district in America. Stephen Ritz and his community plant school gardens and harvest organic citizens.<\/p>\n<p>*<em>Green Bronx Machine<\/em> was also selected as the &lsquo;People&rsquo;s Choice&rsquo; winner, earning nearly 2,000 online votes from the film&rsquo;s supporters.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Second runner-up: <em>A Greene Generatio<\/em>n, by Tim Grant of Charlotte, NC.<\/p>\n<p>In rural western North Carolina the Greene family runs a small, organic family farm. Fourteen-year old Nathaniel Greene and his siblings are passionate about caring for their pigs, their land and about producing good food.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Third runner-up, tied: <em>Who Keeps the Beekeepers<\/em><strong>,<\/strong> by Timothy Powers of St. Petersburg, FL.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve heard about the bees, but what about the beekeepers? The voices of the last remaining beekeepers talk about the future of our food supply.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Third runner-up, tied: <em>The Gift<\/em>, by Jean-Marc Abela of Montr&eacute;al, Qu&eacute;bec.<\/p>\n<p>On a small speck of land off the island of Vancouver, Dan Jason farms seeds.
