Photo credit: African Development Bank Group\"><\/p>\n<p>The African Renewable Energy Fund (AREF) this week reached the halfway point to its goal of $200 million in capital funding to support <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/category\/business\/renewable-business\/\" target=\"_blank\">renewable energy<\/a> projects in the sub-Saharan region of the continent.<\/p>\n<p>In conjunction with its launch, AREF announced that it has closed its first round of capital fundraising, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afdb.org\/en\/news-and-events\/article\/african-renewable-energy-fund-aref-launches-with-100m-committed-capital-12901\/\" target=\"_blank\">receiving $100 million<\/a> to support the producers of a slew of small-to-medium-scale, grid-connected projects that will deploy wind, solar and other forms of energy. To be located in Nairobi, Kenya, AREF will be managed by&nbsp;Berkeley Energy Africa, which specializes in developing and investing in renewable energy projects in emerging markets.<\/p>\n<p>The fund will continue to target producers interested in developing projects between 5 and 50 megawatts (MW) and committing $10 million to $30 million. Photo credit: African Development Bank Group[\/caption]\n<p>&#8220;The launch of a first pan-African dedicated renewable energy fund, with a center of gravity in Africa, sourcing a majority of its capital from Africa at an exciting time in the evolution of macro-economic factors in Africa&rsquo;s favor, presents a propitious environment for the investment of AREF,&#8221; said TC Kundi,&nbsp;Berkeley Energy&rsquo;s managing partner.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We aim to use Berkeley Energy&rsquo;s technical and financial experience to ensure that a part of Africa&rsquo;s growing need for power is met through responsibly developed clean energy projects that improve the generation mix and maximize the use of local resources.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The fund was originally presented as a joint initiative by the African Biofuel and Renewable Energy Company (ABREC) and the African Development Bank (AfDB), both of whom remain involved. With $65 million in an equity investment package, the&nbsp;AfDB is the fund&#8217;s largest sponsor.<\/p>\n<p>The investor group also includes West African Development Bank (BOAD) and&nbsp;Ecowas Bank for Investment and Development, among others.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Populations&rsquo; access to clean and renewable energy sources is one of the key objectives set by BOAD,&#8221; Bassary Tour&eacute;, vice chairman of BOAD, said. &#8220;Hence, this equity investment in AREF&rsquo;s capital will help increase BOAD&rsquo;s action in the area.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Last year, U.S. President Barack Obama <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/11\/12\/obamas-power-africa-plan-build-solar-farms-ethiopia\/\" target=\"_blank\">announced&nbsp;Power Africa<\/a>, a plan to add 10,000 MW of clean energy to Africa in the next 17 years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stumbleupon.com\/lists\/976833820242500752\/top-renewable-energy-breakthroughs\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"stumbleupon\" src=\"http:\/\/files.cdn.ecowatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/stumbleupon.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"125\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1,57],"tags":[2892,12198,2913],"class_list":["post-23674","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-green-building-posts","category-leed-news","tag-business","tag-featured-business","tag-renewables"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23674","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=23674"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23674\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=23674"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=23674"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/leedpoints.com\/green-building-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=23674"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
