U.S. Sen. majority leader Harry Reid never minces words, and there was no reason for him to begin doing so when discussing the standoff between supporters of a private rancher and federal officials<\/a> last week in Nevada.<\/p>\n “Those people who hold themselves out to be patriots are not. They’re nothing more than domestic terrorists,” Reid told the Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/em><\/a> at an event sponsored by the publication.<\/p>\n “I repeat: what went on up there was domestic terrorism.”<\/p>\n Before guns were drawn, the federal government had been removing rancher Cliven Bundy’s cattle and impounding them in a corral in nearby Mesquite, NV, because he had kept his more than 900 head of cattle on a piece of 600,000-acre federal land for the past two decades without paying taxes. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) increased grazing fees in 1993 in order to save critical habitat for the endangered Mojave Desert tortoise. Bundy owes the federal government about $1 million. <\/p>\n[embed]https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v88448d0DIo[\/embed]\n Ring of Fire’s Mike Papantonio tried to put all of this into perspective during an appearance Thursday on on MSNBC’s The Ed Show<\/em>. Even though the BLM said it would stop its cattle roundup operations in hopes of reasoning with Bundy in court, Papantonio says there “no reason to cut a deal at all,” since the government has essentially been trying to do that for two decades.<\/p>\n “They’ve tried to negotiate with him, they’ve pleaded with him, they’ve said ‘ just do what you should do … do what other cattleman do,'” Papantonio said. “The Cattleman’s association, as you know, has even distanced [itself] from him.”<\/p>\n Bundy and his family did not respond to Las Vegas Review-Journal’s requests for comment on Reid’s remarks, but his son, Aman Bundy, told Fox News that Reid should be removed from office<\/a> if he doesn’t understand that “we the people got together and made something right.”<\/p>\n Of course, that’s not how Bundy’s defiance is coming across.<\/p>\n “Clive Bundy does not recognize the United States,” Reid said. “He says that the United States is a foreign government. He doesn’t pay his taxes. He doesn’t pay his fees.
