Living in small spaces requires sacrifice, one of which is definitely giving up room for guests. Sure, you can put them on the couch, but that means limited use of the kitchen and living area in the mornings, or evenings, which doesn’t make for a very enjoyable visit. The firm PKMN Architectures has come up with a smart solution for this problem. The Casa Stella project, which they recently completed, features a guest room stowed away in a movable wall until it is needed.
The space saving guest room system they created for Casa Stella features rails built into a false ceiling of the apartment, on which the movable wall hangs, forming an autonomous unit. By pushing a dedicated button, this wall moves 14 ft (4.5 m) across the floor. The entire process takes about 30 seconds to complete and once the wall is moved, it separates the normally 400 sq ft (37 sq m) living space into a smaller 160 sq ft (14 sq m) guest room, and a living area of 240 sq ft (22 sq m). The guest room thus created can be accessed via the terrace of the apartment, which gives the guests even more privacy.
The room which is created this way is equipped with a pull-down guest bed, though this area can also be used for other purposes, such as a playroom for kids, or a home office. The latter can be formed by folding out the table, which is contained within the wall. Most of the storage room is also located inside this movable wall unit.
Casa Stella is located in Madrid, Spain and the guest room solution was built to accommodate the owner’s wish to have family visit and stay with them. It might not be a completely novel idea, but it does solve the problem quickly and easily, as well as affordably.
