While most manufacturing jobs in the nation are disappearing, becoming obsolete or being shifted oversees, the green sector continues to add more manufacturing jobs in the United States. That couldn’t be more true then in the region of Sacramento, California. A new report out from the Sacramento Area Regional Technology Alliance (SARTA) shows regional employment at clean tech manufacturing and design companies are actually outpacing nationwide trends.
The 2012 SARTA CleanStart Progress Report shows regional employment with clean tech manufacturing and design companies growing to more than 2,200 jobs compared to 1,800 jobs three years ago. The total number of area clean tech companies residing in the area comes in at 96. And, all of those jobs are also bringing in lots of revenue.
According to the report, those cleantech manufacturing and design companies generated more than $1.5 billion in revenue in 2011, an increase of 131 percent from combined 2008 revenue of $650 million.

The report also draws on a recent Brookings Institute study showing the Sacramento cleantech economy growth is significantly outpacing the cleantech economy growth in the U.S. overall. According to that report, Sacramento ranks no. 12 out of 100 metropolitan regions in the total number of clean economy related jobs.
“Much of the recent growth is from solar and energy efficiency businesses,” Gary Simon, SARTA CleanStart chair said in a statement. “We’ve made good progress, and have significant opportunity for continued growth across the entire sector.”
Sacramento is said to have become one of the chosen regions for solar companies to relocate and set up either regional or national headquarters. It is home to more than nine solar companies that have relocated. A number of additional solar companies grew organically in the area. That solar cluster represents a significant portion of employees and revenue in the overall cleantech sector.
