Solar Screens Jump-Start Energy Efficient Actions

California-based BB Commercial Solutions (BBCS) believes eco-friendly solar shades and screens are considered a green window treatment because they help to lower emissions by creating a more comfortable environment without the use of heating and cooling systems.

According to BBCS, it recently launched a full line of solar screens for commercial use. Not only do they eliminate most glare, they are effective in controlling energy costs. The company’s solar shades and screens are also flame retardant, antimicrobial and a certified green product that is 100 percent recyclable.

Aluminum Screen Manufacturing, a BBCS partner, manufactures Suntex, an exterior solar shading product by Phifer that can block up to 90 percent of the sun’s heat and glare before it reaches the interior. These solar screens are also flame retardant, antimicrobial and a certified green and 100 percent recyclable.

For interiors, Phifer recently produced its SheerWeave 4000, made with bio-based plasticizers. The company adds that during construction these eco-friendly solar shades lower greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent compared to current PVC compounds, which helps in lowering the carbon footprint from manufacturing these shades.

The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) has certified Phifer SheerWeave interior sun control fabrics for superior indoor air quality performance. These shades may also count for credits toward LEED certification.

These solar shades are manufactured in an entirely new and environmentally sustainable way, they maintain all of the established benefits of traditional vinyl such as durability, cleanability, and fabric longevity.
