Building Trust International recently announced the winners of the 2014 Moved To Care competition. The competition called for a solution for providing healthcare in rural areas of Asia, and the student winner of the competition was Christopher Knitt of the University of Wisconsin for his design of Reflex, a clinic made from a repurposed shipping container that can easily be deployed anywhere. Apart from being upcycled, this clinic can also operate off-the-grid and invites the participation of the local community in its deployment.
Using recycled shipping containers as a mobile medical clinic allows for its simple and economic deployment and relocation. Reflex is made from a single shipping container, which provides a 250 square foot climate-controlled clinic where sanitary procedures can be performed. It has well insulated walls, while it also features a telescoping steel ribcage, which makes it possible to adapt it to a wide range of uses and deploy it in many different locations.
The design also calls for rooftop-mounted solar panels, which would harvest and generate enough power to cater to the facilities needs. The roof is also gently sloping to allow for effective on-site rainwater collection, which is stored in a tank at the rear of the unit. Reflex has a double roof system that allows for natural ventilation of the interior space. The design also allows for raising the unit on adjustable legs, which lets it be adapted for use even in flood condition. Because of its telescoping design, multiple Reflex units can also easily be attached together when a situation calls for a larger clinic.
When deployed, the Reflex arrives on-site as a single, self-contained unit, with the telescoping steel ribcage stowed inside. This frame slides out easily once the clinic arrives and is locked into place to form a waiting area for the patients. Wooden panels are fitted into the steel skeleton with help from the local community, which lets the unit be adapted to the culture it will serve. Should the unit have to be deployed elsewhere, the new cladding can be stored inside the shipping container part of the clinic for transportation.
