Dune House Blends In

side

Dune House is located on the Terschelling island in Holland and was designed by Marc Koehler Architects. It stands on the beach and blends in perfectly with the surrounding dunes and tufts of grass. The home is also eco-friendly and sustainable.

The architects wanted to create something that did not stand out, yet was still unique and Dune House achieves precisely that. It features a distinct, faceted shape with cladding the color of the sand. The house is unique also in the way in which it is embedded into the environment, since it offers the occupants the chance to enjoy all beachside views, including the dunes, beach, and sea. This arrangement was inspired by the idea of someone walking along the sand dunes on a beach.

Dune House features a central core around which the house was built. This core also has storage built in, acts as a bookcase and also provides heat for the home. The rest of the home rises up in loft-like levels around the core. The living and dining areas, as well as the kitchen are located on the top level, which is spacious and very well lit. The bedrooms, on the other hand are located on the lowest level.

The home features lots of floor to ceiling windows, which lets in plenty of natural daylight into the home, and gives the sense that you are actually on the beach. The use of so many windows likely taxes the heating system in the colder months of the year, so it’s a good thing that the home is also energy-efficient and has a central heating system that runs on bio-fuel to reduce its carbon footprint. Dune House was also constructed using a cross-laminated timber structure and other environmentally-conscious and sustainable materials.
