Playz Architects Use Shipping Containers to Construct a Shanghai Farm Hotel

Playz Architects have built a dramatically shaped office building/hotel lobby for Tony’s Farm, an organic food producer in Shanghai. The farm is the largest in Shanghai and promotes “healthy food, responsible lifestyle, and environmental harmony,” so of course the building had to be done to meet these standards and provide a sustainable, responsible place for tourists to stay.

The German Expo Pavilion design team created the “container” hotel, transforming shipping containers into an eco-friendly, comfortable hotel incorporating Chinese typologies, such as sun protecting outdoor spaces and the sequential transition between indoor and outdoor areas. The architects say container architecture has become popular because of the direct reuse of a popular material, and when the project is completed, there are virtually no scraps left behind.
