Green Globes listed as a sustainability certification option in the City of Charlotte, North Carolina, under the revised Sustainable Facilities policy.
Portland, Ore. – The Green Building Initiative (GBI) applauds the City of Charlotte, North Carolina, for its inclusion of Green Globes certification in its Sustainable Facilities Policy, revised late 2020. The City of Charlotte is committed to operating its buildings and facilities responsibly and sustainably. In December 2018, the Charlotte City Council approved the city’s Strategic Energy Action Plan (SEAP), which aims to reduce its carbon footprint through a variety of actions, including those focused on buildings and energy generation. The Sustainable and Resilient Charlotte resolution is how the City of Charlotte will strive to source 100% of its energy use in buildings and fleet from zero carbon sources by 2030. The revised Sustainable Facilities Policy aims to direct City departments to design, construct, and operate City buildings in a manner aligned with the 2030 SEAP goals.
Under the policy, all City-owned or City-managed new construction and major renovation projects must achieve either Green Globes® or LEED® certification, and ENERGY STAR® certification (where applicable). The policy also requires commissioning for all new construction projects and emphasizes site selection that creates minimal disturbance and considers adaptive reuse of existing City-owned and community resources, among other sustainable initiatives.
GBI has certified nearly 400 million square feet in the U.S. and Canada and a number of projects in the City of Charlotte with Green Globes, including Multifamily housing projects, medical offices, financial offices, grocery stores, and residence halls. There are also several projects currently pursuing Green Globes certification, including expansion projects at the Charlotte Airport. “GBI is thrilled to continue supporting project teams and building owners with Green Globes certification, and to contribute to the achievement of the City of Charlotte’s advanced sustainability goals,” said Vicki Worden, GBI President & CEO. “The adaptability of the Green Globes system is proven to be effective and efficient for certifying all types of commercial and multifamily buildings regardless of size, budget, or function.”
