Portland, Ore. – The Green Building Initiative, Inc. (GBI) is pleased to announce the inclusion of Green Globes certification in Hawaii’s State of Environmental Standards. The standard, developed to incentivize energy efficiency, requires every state agency building be designed and constructed to meet Two Green Globes, LEED Silver, or other state-approved certification system.

“GBI applauds the State of Hawaii for improving building efficiency by encouraging an open market for sustainability certification,” said Vicki Worden, GBI President & CEO. “Green Globes is a collaborative and transparent certification system that emphasizes energy efficient design and performance while also evaluating and improving occupant health and wellness and building resilience. This certification directly supports the State’s goals to create a sustainable built environment.”

To date, GBI has certified nearly half a million square feet in Hawaii under Green Globes certification and Guiding Principles Compliance verification for federally owned buildings. This revised House Bill 2255 requires that public benefits fee administrator and utility rebates be used where available for state buildings and facilities. It prioritizes efficient appliances that meet the required standards to qualify for public benefits fee administrator rebates. The Act will take effect on July 1, 2022.

GBI’s reputation for excellence has been earned by applying a tailored approach to certification. GBI pairs project teams with highly qualified third-party assessors from the earliest stages of their efforts through onsite assessment and walk-through and delivery of a customized final certification report. All assessors have significant experience in the design and operation of sustainable buildings. GBI’s Green Globes interactive software allows building owners to monitor and compare performance for individual buildings or across portfolios.

GBI is pleased to offer education and support to interested A/E/C firms, sustainability consultants and building owners pursuing Green Globes certification. Please contact info@thegbi.org to schedule a meeting or presentation.
