Trina Solar wafer facility coming online this year to only serve U.S. market

Trina Solar US alleviated concerns of new tariffs being placed on its modules by announcing a 6.5 GW silicon solar wafer facility coming online in Vietnam by mid-2023 to supply the utility, commercial & industrial, and residential solar markets in the United States.

The Department of Commerce’s anti-dumping and countervailing (AD/CVD) duties determination made in December 2022, for the most part, penalized solar cells/modules being manufactured in Southeast Asia that sources its solar wafers in China (click that link for the finer details). So, for Trina, any PV module produced with this new supply of wafers would avoid any new tariffs associated with that AD/CVD ruling.

Trina’s ongoing process already includes polysilicon sourced outside of China and manufacturing modules and cells in Southeast Asia. The wafer facility is a further step in Trina’s supply chain diversification. Trina’s Southeast Asia cell and module manufacturing facility will utilize wafer capacity from the facility in Vietnam.

Earlier this week, Trina also announced that its 210mm n-type i-TOPCon cells are rolling off its 8 GW factory production lines in the Suqian, Jiangsu province. These n-type cells will be used to produce the new generation Vertex N modules, with power output up to 605 W and efficiency reaching 22.4%.
