West Hartford, Connecticut-based solar developer Verogy has received permits to build solar projects on three former landfills. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) granted permits to convert sites in Deep River, Middletown and Montville, Connecticut, into solar energy projects.
The capped landfills will now host solar projects with an aggregate size of 2.15 MWdc and will produce more than 2.6 GWh of clean energy per year.
Landfills are often seen as environmental burdens to their communities. Through Verogy, these parcels will be given a new lease on life and will be converted from underutilized sites into useful assets. In total, the company will redevelop more than seven acres of remediated land, bringing the properties back into productive use.
The recent approvals from CT DEEP reflect a core strategy of the company, which is to develop and prioritize opportunities to convert landfill sites into clean energy producing properties.
